U.S. III SYLLABUS

Course Outline

This course is designed to enhance the students knowledge of the 20th Century, as well as focus their attention on the global events taking place around them. It will focus on the major events of this century such as the Great Depression, World War II, The Holocaust, The Cold War, The Korean War, The Vietnam War, the 60's, and Watergate. Several supplementary materials will be used including movies, and a novel.

Unit I. The Great Depression and The New Deal-apprx. 4 weeks

A. Chapter 25 - Politics and a Thin Prosperity (pages 633-651)
    1. Discuss the stock market and its role in todays society.
    2. Analyze the various possible causes for the stock market crash of 1929.
    3. Understand the role of the "Red Scare" and its affect on isolationism.
    4. Be aware of the role that racism played in the 1920's
    5. Define the terms located on the chapter study guide.

B. Chapter 26- The Great Depression Begins (pages 657-673)
    1. Analyze the causes of the Great Depression.
    2. Understand why Americans rejected the policies of the Hoover administration in the election of 1932.
    3. Discuss the tone that was established during the early days of the Roosevelt administration.
    4. Become knowledgeable about the causes of the "Dust Bowl"

C. Chapter 27 - The New Deal and Reform (pages 677-699)
    1. Recognize the signs of recovery that characterized the First Hundred Days
    2. Understand why some important New Deal measures have endured
    3. Be able to understand why the New Deal was criticized by people from both ends of the political spectrum
    4. Know what major social changes occurred in the U.S. during the 1930's as a result of the New Deal.
    5. Understand the purpose of the TVA, and the social and economic consequences that resulted from its implementation.

Unit II. World War II-apprx. 6 weeks

    1. Understand the events that eventually led to World War II.
    2. Understand how world events challenged the U.S. policy of neutrality.
    3. Describe how Germany's political actions of 1939 became the immediate causes of World War II.
    4. Analyze the early events of World War II both in Europe and the U. S.
    5. Understand what causes racial and ethnic hating and its development into genocide.

B. The Holocaust
    1. Understand the chronology of the holocaust.
    2. Discuss racial stereotypes, conformity, obedience and choices.
    3. Discuss how a racial state can be built
    4. Discuss recent events concerning genocide, and their impact on todays culture.
